Porsche 918 Supercar Hybrid

Porsche 918Porsche 918

During this morning’s Cars and Coffee show in Scottsdale, AZ a new Porsche 918 Spyder rolled in. The Spyder is Porsche’s second hybrid and trust me this is miles different from a Prius! This supercar is a mid engine plug in. The V8 engine produces 608 horses from the gasoline engine with the two electrical motors on the front and rear axles capable of generating another 278 horses, totaling 887 ponies at your command. This one is painted Sapphire Blue Metallic.Porsche 918 Driver's Side

Stats on Porsche

Ironically the range under all electric is a meager 12 miles! But hey it tops out at 210 mph. It gets rated at 67 mpg equivalent when in electric mode and 22 mpg when powered by the gasoline engine. The added electrical torque makes for some jaw breaking acceleration. Those pipes on the rear deck are not for show. They are the true exhaust points and the short distance from the mid-engine allows for much lower exhaust back pressure.

Porsche 918 Engine Deck

Porsche is planning on producing only 918 units (get it 918 units for the 918 model?) all listed as the 2014 model year. Too late to orders yours, they sold out with a base price of $845,000. But hey you do get a federal energy tax credit for it.

Porsche Driving Modes

The 918 Spyder offers five different running modes: all electric or E-Drive, Three combination or hybrid and gasoline engine are also allowed Hybrid, Sport and Race. Hot Lap gives out the full power available from the Porsche.Porsche 918 Emblem

What do you think of this hybrid, supercar?

Pratte Collection Selling at Barrett-Jackson

Ron Pratte’s extensive car collection, including cars and automobilia, is selling at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale, AZ. We have previously offered an exclusive look at his collection on  this website. Our friends at Barrett-Jackson have just announced that they are expanding their auction dates to accommodate all the vehicles.

Barrett-Jackson Auction, January 2015

The auction in Scottsdale, AZ will now  start on Saturday January 10th, with portions of Pratte’s automobilia being sold from Saturday January 10th through Tuesday the 13th. Traditionally the auction house starts each morning with some automobilia but his extensive collection obviously requires more lots and time. Usually car sales don’t start until Tuesday.

Ron Pratte Collection

Pratte collected a massive amount of cars and they are auctioning off his cars on Tuesday January 13th and on the “prime time” Saturday January 17th. Saturday afternoon and evening is traditionally the ONE day for the most anticipated vehicles, (like the Batmobile) selling at the highest prices.

Pratte’s collection includes some historic vintage cars, many built by highly regarded fabricators like Boyd Coddington and numerous cars he bought whose proceeds went to charity. In fact he often bought a charity car and then re-donated it back so it could be auctioned off again.  Several of his cars are selling, with the proceeds going to specific charities, that he always has supported.

Looks like Barrett-Jackson week just got longer.  Will you be attending?

Drew’s Garage Spotlighted with 68 Charger

Drew’s Garage in Tempe, AZ is featured in the August, 2014 issue of Performance and Hot Rod Business.  Our friends at the publication did a nice feature on this local garage.

Here’s a link to the six page article.

We recently featured Drew’s Garage with this article on Larry Fitzgerald’s 1968 Dodge Charger.  Here’s the link as well.

In the article. the owner Drew Tennant discussed the origins of his shop and how showcasing his cars at Barrett-Jackson and Goodguys Rod and Custom helped his business grow.  It is interesting to read that most of his employees are auditioned and hired from out of state.

Nice compliments to a true class act.

Boyd Coddington Cars from Ron Pratte Collection

Boyd Coddington built a great variety of award winning cars.  This Southern California icon left us way too soon.  But fortunately his cars remain to showcase his vision and talent.

Ron Pratte Collection

Ron Pratte collected plenty of cars over the years and will be selling them at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Arizona in January.  While specifics haven’t been finalized, it is thought that all his cars will be sold.  Here’s a link to our first article about Ron Pratte selling off his cars.

Pratte never has opened his car collection to the public but we got an exclusive peek a few years ago.

Boyd Coddington

Amongst his collection, Pratte owns the largest collection of Boyd Coddington built cars.  Coddington earned fame after winning an AMBR award but many first heard of him on a reality TV show, American Hot Rod – that set the theme for car building TV series.

In Pratte’s collection are a stylistic version of the classic 57 Chevy – Chezoom,  a homage to a 32 Delahaye called the Whatthehaye and the AlumaTub.

All three cars reflect Coddington’s iconic style, long sweeping lines and smooth bodysides.

Here’s a link to an article we contributed to eBay Motors on these Boyd Coddington cars.

Pratte Collection Selling Soon

As we previously posted here, Barrett-Jackson sources confirmed that they are selling Ron Pratte’s collection of classic cars and automobilia in January during their auction in Scottsdale, AZ.

Car Collection of Ron Pratte

Ron Pratte

Ron Pratte has amassed an impressive collection of classic cars over the past few years.  He has been a fixture at the car auctions, but rarely opened his collection to the public for viewing.  But we were able to get some exclusive photos of just some of his massive storage warehouse.

Barrett-Jackson officials haven’t yet confirmed the details of which cars will sell or how they plan to package these classics during the January, 2015 auction.

Pratte Car Collection Selling Soon

Ron Pratte has been a prolific classic car collector and is known for the size of his private collection and his generosity in buying “charity” cars, with the  proceeds going to specific charities.

Arizona Auction

Recently Barrett-Jackson confirmed the swirling rumors that Ron Pratte was selling his entire collection next January at their Scottsdale, AZ auction at Westworld.

Ron Pratte Collection

Ron Pratte stored his cars behind closed doors in Chandler, Arizona and only rarely allowed outsiders to see these cars.  These pictures are rare glimpses of some expensive and profound historical cars.

Here is a link to an eBay Motors article we recently wrote highlighting three vehicles from Ron Pratte’s collection that presumably are selling.  What do you think they’ll sell for?  Subscribe to this blog for a future update on another part of his collection.

McLaren MP4 12C Black Beauty

McLaren MP4 12C

DSCN5563

Had a chance to see two McLaren’s side by side at a recent “Cars and Coffee” in Scottsdale, AZ.  For my taste these cars are tons nicer than many exotics and technologically miles ahead of their competitors.

Here is a link to our article for eBay Motors.

MP4 12C

The nomenclature for the McLaren is an interesting story.

MP4 stand for McLaren Project  4, which is the chassis designation. The “12” is an index number that McLaren uses to designate the performance of all their cars.  The C represents carbon for all the carbon fiber used throughout the chassis and body areas.

After 2012, McLaren dropped the MP4 designation for this car series and just referred to the car as a 12C

McLaren Performance

The car accelerates from 0-60 MPH in around three seconds and tops out officially at 207 MPH.  It is powered by a V8 engine linked to twin turbos.  Seeing the rear mounted engine through the transparent car cover is a treat.

McLaren Airfoil

The carbon fiber rear air foil is used in severe braking helping to slow down this powerhouse, plus it just looks darn neat.

DSCN5559

McLaren Dihedral Door

Sometimes referred to as a vertical door or a lambo door, these are butterfly doors or dihedral doors.  A neat piece of engineering and allows for easy access against curbs.  Plus it looks neat when you leave a door open at a car show

McLaren Photos

The gallery shows some additional photos that didn’t make it in to the eBay article.

Cruise on Central revisited

55 ChevyWe had the chance to write an article for eBay Motors  n the Cruise on Central.  Here’s the link to the article.

We wrote about it earlier here and even submitted a quick video on YouTube as well.  Some additional pictures have been shared on Google + as well.

Cruise on Central

The Cruise on Central has some legendary history especially among long time locals and natives.  Find out how it started back in the 60’s,  was policed out of existence and then revived first as an unsanctioned event and now a local promoter has taken it under her wing.

Dan Sobieski’s 1962 Cadillac at Goodguys

62 CadillacAt the Goodguys Fifth Spring Nationals Car Show held in Scottsdale, AZ Dan Sobieksi brought out his green 1962 Cadillac.  This Cadillac was scrapping the asphalt.  1962 Cadillac passenger side

The judges were right to award it their So Low pick.

Dan Sobieski

While you might not recognize the name, you’ll probably recall that he was a fabricator at Boyd Coddington’s shop when it was captured on TV’s American Hot Rod.  Dan formed his own shop Poor Boys Hot Rods and in fact occupies part of Boyd’s old shop in La Habra, CA.  We have spotted Dan swinging by with one of his rods at the Friday night cruise – Cruising Grand – in Escondido Ca

The Cadillac was down low but also spotlighted a custom authenticate flake green paint job for the roofline.  In fact it was painted just months before the Goodguys Rod and Custom show.  1962 Cadillac Roofline

Everything about this rod screamed period authentic custom.  Nice to see such a good eye for detail.  Dan has a Facebook page for his 1962 Cadillac.

On Sunday in the awards area, Dan’s lady friend had a matching purse.  PurseHave to wonder which came first the car or the purse?

Goodguys Spring Nationals in Scottsdale

Goodguys Rod and Customs kicked off their year of car shows at Scottsdale, Arizona on March 7-9, 2014.  Goodguys was started in 1983 and keeps getting bigger and better every year.

Goodguys

Over 2,500 cars were registered for the event, with the highest amount showing up at Scottsdale’s Westworld show grounds on Saturday.  Great Arizona weather helped contribute to the crowds that came in to see the cars and vendors.

This was the Fifth Annual Spring Nationals show and they end their season back in Scottsdale with their Southwest Nationals in November, which will be their 17th annual fall event.

The show issues out over 75 “picks” or awards at the show and rather than being judged, the show picks winners in several unique categories.  It may be a fine point but by not judging cars, you don’t have to justify why one car was “judged” better; you just pick a winner!  It is funny though to see the length some car winners(whiners) will go to win a simple $25 plaque.

Also at these shows the folks from Goodguys pick finalists in various categories for a final nationwide award.  At this show they selected finalists for

Westworld Scottsdale, Arizona

Westworld is a great venue for the Goodguys car show.  It is close to a freeway and has a large shade structure for indoor vendors (the former site for Barrett-Jackson’s cat auction).  Besides asphalt parking on top, there is a lower section, that is a combination of more asphalt and ever popular grass.

The Goodguys show includes a Car Corral area with more car parts vendors and cars in all stages of restoration and marquees for sale.  Of course some cars on the show grounds are also sporting for sale signs too.

Goodguys Entry Qualifications

Only cars made in 1972 or older are allowed for the first two days of the show but on Sunday the gates are wide open to any year and marquee.

Next site for the Goodguys will be next weekend at Fort Worth, Texas.
