Easiest Car Repair After a Crash

With the technology of today’s car getting more and more sophisticated a motor vehicle crash can end up being a major cost and a time consuming process. But there is one part of a repair that is easy to do and takes less than an hour.Evenflo_EveryStageDLX_FFHarness_Lifestyle_5

Car Seat Replacement

After a major crash, your child’s car seat needs replacing! While it may look safe and undamaged, odds are that it sustained hidden stress and strain while keeping the child safe and unharmed. The car seat did its job, so now you as a parent (or grandparent) needs to do the right thing and get a new car seat for your youngster.

This week, September 23-29, 2018, is Child Passenger Safety Week and several companies are helping to get the message out that after a crash, you need to replace the child car seat.

Car Seat Spokesperson

Shannon SpakeSpokesperson Shannon Spake, from Fox Sports, noted “when your car is involved in a crash, it’s just as important that you take care of your car seat or booster seat as it is to address the car damage.”

Evenflo, a major car seat manufacturer, stresses that even though the seat may look undamaged, it may no longer be usable and safe to save a child in future impacts. This is clearly a case if being “better safe, than sorry.”

Car repair shops, like the nationwide CARSTAR network, commits to reminding car owners that the seats should be replaced and are often covered under the insurance policies.

Obviously not all fender benders would necessitate a replacement, so the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) advises car seats do not need replacement if the car was in a minor crash.

Minor Crash Defined

NHTSA further defines a minor crash as

  • The vehicle was able to be driven away from the crash site
  • The vehicle door nearest the car seat was not damaged
  • None of the passengers in the vehicle sustained any injuries in the crash
  • If the vehicle has air bags, the air bags did not deploy during the crash
  • There is no visible damage to the car seat

Also just because the car seat was unoccupied during the crash does not mean it can be used again! It likely still suffered stress and strain even without a child in the seat.Evenflo_EveryStageDLX_RFHarness_Lifestyle_3

Shannon Spake Spokesperson

After all as Spake notes, “You always want to make sure your children are protected in the car.”

When replacing the car seat, send it to a recycling center and never give it away or offer it to a charitable group for reuse. Plus don’t forget to register your new seat with manufacturer in case of future safety recalls. If the new seat is different, you may seek out help to ensure it is installed correctly.

So when in doubt, throw it out!

Nonsense All Purpose Cleaner from Chemical Guys

Car owners realize that keeping their car clean is important but sometimes life gets in the way. Before you know it, a car interior can get grungy. But it is amazing how simple it can be to bring a car’s interior back to prime looks. A useful all purpose cleaner is Nonsense from Chemical Guys.Bottle of Nonsense All Purpose Cleaner

Nonsense

I have been a huge fan and user of Nonsense ever since the main guy behind Chemical Guys recommended it to me. It comes full strength and I usually get great results diluted to a 10:1 ratio. Nonsense pulls up the grime, leaves no sticky residue and doesn’t engulf the air with perfume odors. We love that it just does the job and gets great results.

Nonsense to the Test

These seats on a 2007 Toyota Camry are a soft fabric, but the light gray coloring will attract dirt quickly. I was wondering if the dirt was ground in too much, so I did a test strip first. A simple spray of the cloth, followed by a brisk scrubbing with a hand held brush and the results showed up! Dirty Car Seat Half Cleaned with Nonsense

A few more minutes of scrubbing and the whole car seat came back to new. I especially like the fact that the cloth maintained the original feel and shape with no soapy residue left behind.Cleaned with Nonsense Close Up

Nonsense from Chemical Guys

Nonsense is part of a complete set of boutique car detailing products offered by Chemical Guys. You can also get it at their franchised retail stores- Detail Garage. It works on a variety of stains and never lets me down. For a super tough stain you could amp up the dilution level but 10:1 seems to be the perfect stain removal solution for me. Try some and let us know what you think!Cleaned with Nonsense Extreme Close Up of Cloth

Honda’s Minnie Van Is Pink Cuteness

Okay I’ll admit it.  I like cute.  And sometimes a car comes along that is just darn cute.  The folks at Honda put some sugar on their new 2018 Honda Odyssey van and overdosed on cuteness.  Throw in a tribute to Disney and bam you have total cuteness to the nth degree. Thanks to their Minnie Van

Honda Minnie Van

Minnie Van

Each year Disney fans gather for the Disney D23 Expo.  Think of it as Comic Con for Disney fans.  So Honda crafted a Minnie Van that they displayed at the show.  Of course a Minnie creation had to be in pink polka dots and sport some ears and a sporty bow.

Honda Odyssey Minnie Van

The new Honda Odyssey matches well with the target audience of soccer moms and dads needing to haul a bunch of tykes to here and there.  The new 2018 version builds on the best selling minivan in America and is made in the USA. The Odyssey has been the top selling van for the past seven years and this new build increases the ride and looks of the minivan segment.

Honda Minnie Van Front

So my guess is the Minnie Van will be making the rounds around the country, putting some smiles on lots of faces and maybe a Mickey van will soon appear?

Dodge Demon Delays Dealership’s Shake Downs

Dodge Demon Smoking the TiresKudos to the suits at Dodge that established a production system that will punish dealerships that opt to sell the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon with outrageous dealer premiums.  Last week Dodge announced how the monster 840 horsepower Dodge Demon  will be allocated.

Dodge Demon Allocation

The Dodge dealerships will be parceled out the limited run of 3,300 Demons based on objective criteria including:

·         Sold at least one Hellcat in past twelve months

·         Allocation will be based on how many Hellcats they sold (60%) and their sales of the “regular” Chargers and Challengers (40%)

Dodge Demon MSRP

To prevent price gouging, those Dodge Demons sold at MSRP (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price) or less will be produced first.  So the dealerships wanting to rocket up the price and their profits on these limited edition speedsters will be the last to the party.

In case you were wondering the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon starts at a U.S. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price of $84,995 (including $1,700 gas guzzler tax, excluding $1,095 destination); Demon crate unleashes full power for $1.  So spring for the extra buck and get the full package!

Dodge Demon

In case you were sleeping under a rock the Dodge Demon is designed for the strip and is the fastest quarter-mile production car ever.  It will be delivered in the fall of 2017 as a 2018 model year Challenger. It has been clocked at 9.65 seconds for the true quarter mile at 140 mph, with sticky tires.  And yes it raised the front wheels off the ground.  When’s the last time you saw that at the local drag strip.

Paperwork for Dodge Demon To avoid shenanigans, the dealership will have to submit a notarized sales order.  The owner must also sign off on some safety/technical notes that will probably help Dodge when the inevitable lawsuit emerges after the first collision from a Demon.  Hopefully not at a Cars and Coffee event.
Last week was the beginning of the ordering period.  My guess is the available Dodge Demons will go quick.

Porsche 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series

Porsche announced a limited edition of the 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series.  How exclusive is this Porsche 911?  Just 500 units are being hand made for worldwide distribution.

How fast is the Porsche 911?  With a special tune the powerplant is cranking out 607 horses.  These Porsche 911’s will be hand finished by the new Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur at the headquarters in Zuffenhausen. Previously called “Porsche Exclusive”, this in-house workshop focuses on  tailoring unique cars to customer wishes, as well as being producing these limited-edition series.

Porsche 911 Engine

The six cylinder flat 3.8 liter biturbo engine helps the 911 go 0-60 in under three seconds, with a top “track” speed of 205 MPH.  The 911 comes with the active sports chassis and the Sport Chrono package as standard.

That paint job you see is an exclusive Golden Yellow Metallic, highlighted with some carbon fiber pieces. But the car can come in other paint choices. The sport seats are eighteen way adjustable, just in case you need to get the kinks out during the drive.

BMW Art Car -Worth the wait for #18 ?

BMW Art Car #18BMW Art Car #18 Top View

BMW released their latest art car last week and Chinese artist Cao Fei made a stunning offering. This was the 18th version of a BMW Art Car. She used technology, including an app, to allow an interactive approach to the artwork. Ironically the 19th BMW Art Car was released earlier than this version. You can’t rush artists I guess.

Cao Fei is quoted as saying, “The #18 Art Car questions the existence of the boundaries of the human mind. We are entering a new age, where the mind directly controls objects and where thoughts can be transferred, such as unmanned operations and artificial intelligence.”

The chassis itself is a BMW M6 GT3 racecar with the original carbon black. The car is powered by a 4.4-litre V8 engine with twin turbo’s. That translates to 585 hp with a six-speed sequential racing transmission.

It took three years to develop the car after she was selected as the artist. But this art work doesn’t just sit on a gallery floor. It will be raced by BMW works driver Augusto Farfus at the FIA GT World Cup in Macau in November, 2017.

The BMW Art Car Collection

BMW Art Cars started as a formal tradition in 1975 and Alexaner Calder crafted a BMW 3.0 CSL that subsequently raced at 1975 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. BMW houses the cars in a Munich, Germany museum. Notable artists include Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and others.

BMW Art Car #19BMW Art Car #19 Driver Side

In November, 2016 a BMW GTLM was unveiled by artist John Baldessari as another BMW Art Car (#19) and it raced at the 24 Hours of Daytona in January, 2017.

Many companies sponsor art competitions or have artwork at their companies. But not many go to the extent that BMW does. We always look forward to their next release.

Shart Cat 67 Dart by Gas Monkey Garage

Shart Cat Passenger SideShart Cat is the name of Gas Monkey Garage’s 1967 Dodge Dart that was sent out to compete on a modified parking lot in Detroit, Michigan for an eighth mile drag race against Roadkill’s General Mayhem, a Dodge Charger. If you follow the Fast N’ Loud “Reality TV” show on Discovery, you know after some minor technical difficulties, the Dart driven by Aaron Kaufman beat Roadkill by over half a second. That’s time to make a cup of coffee in drag racing time speak.

Shart Cat Tensions

Shart Cat Hellcat Engine
Shart Cat Hellcat engine

In true reality television tension, after rushing to meet the impossible deadline, the Gas Monkey Garage crew made it up for the grudge match against the maker’s of General Mayhem. Naturally there were some technical, last minute problems to create even more drama. But when the lights came on, Kaufman’s foot went down and so did Roadkill’s hope. Roadkill used a 1968 Dodge Charger, also with a Hellcat engine, but without the drag racing standard two-speed Powerglide or trans brake. That lack of engineering and the lighter weight of a Dart probably doomed the Roadkill crew from the starting lights.

Richard Rawlings didn’t waste any time deciding to sell the Shart Cat at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in January, 2016. The TV episodes made it very clear that NOBODY has slapped a new Hellcat engine into anything without transplanting the entire electronic controllers and brains with it. Check out the typed instructions the auction drivers needed to follow to make the Shart Cat play nice.Shart Cat Driving Instructions

Shart Cat Gas Monkey Logo
Logo of Gas Monkey Garage

To be kind the body was rough, but I suspect that the bidders didn’t care about the exterior as much as being able to tout the car as coming from the Gas Monkey Garage stable. Heck Richard didn’t even pop for any expensive vinyl decals or wraps!

Shart Cat Sells

The buyer shelled out a final price with commissions of $74,800 to be able to place this Dodge in their garage. Would you have spent that much?

Ford GT Times Four

At this month’s Cars and Coffee in Scottsdale,AZ rolled out four Ford GT’s each in a different color.  This is Scottsdale, after all! About all that was missing was the now highly sought after light blue Gulf Oil trim package.

Ford GT and their History

Ford recently announced that they were bringing back the iconic GT40, for the THIRD time and two were at the SEMA Show!GT at SEMA

First Generation – GT40

The first models came out starting in 1964 and were called the GT40 for Grand Touring, and based on its height being 40 inches. It had a nice run from 1964-1969 and actually went through four generations Mk I through Mk IV. They were strictly built as race cars and were very successful in the Le Mans series. Afterwards the model was built by a South Africa shop and called the CAV GT. It caused a bit of controversy at the time, as it was considered a knock off and not true to the original build.

Second Generation – Ford GT

Ford GT with Ford EmblemThe wizards at Ford opted to bring it back in limited production runs from 2005-2006 with just over 4,000 produced, mainly by hand. Pricing started at under $150,000 and had few options to add on. The iconic front end with the huge air intakes were instantly recognizable. Interestingly, they weren’t called GT40 since the trademark belonged to another company, so they called it the Ford GT.Ford GT in Black

Third Generation- GT

Now the new wizards at Ford announced that they are bringing back the model, now called just the GT for yet another round of limited production starting in 2016. Prices haven’t been announced yet, but I’m guessing it’ll hover around $400,000.GT in Race Trim from Ford

What is interesting about the second generation of Ford GT’s from an appraisal aspect, is these cars are one of the few cars that never depreciated in value! Their rarity and styling kept them in demand and the prices just rose from the start. Of course some dealers helped that push, by marking the prices up beyond the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) with a Dealer’s Additional Markup (DAM).

Most new cars rapidly depreciate as soon as the car leaves the dealer’s lot. That’s why some insurance companies offer coverage for that depreciation as an option. If the car were to be totaled a week after you bought it, the insurance companies might offer you far less than what you owe on the loan or lease! How painful would that be?

But depreciation is just as painful in exotic and sports cars. And if you start out with a $200,000+ car that percentage hurts even more. After all if a new buyer can afford to show off by buying a new, Ferrari California convertible for $200,000 why would they pay the same price for your slightly used five-year older version? You would have to drop the price to $120,000 to generate interest and absorb that depreciation. At many car auctions, late-model cars often can be had for less than half their initial selling prices.

Of course over time, the classics do tend to recover their value as pristine models surface and collectors push the demand back up. Trying buying a 69 Camaro now to see how they recovered from their initial depreciation.

There have been a handful of marquees and models that have avoided that huge depreciation sell off. The key tends to be initial limited production, strong buyer interest due to styling or prestige and great builds that don’t have recalls and lemons linked to them. Something to think about when “investing” in a new car or buying an older classic .

I wonder how long it will be before the third generation shows up at a Scottsdale cars and Coffee event?

Laid Back Hauler

When I first saw this COE set up as a hauler at SEMA at the Laid Back USA clothing booth I was blown away.  And the more I looked and drooled, the more I liked!Laid Back Garage

Laid Back Hauler

The 47 GMC COE is a real deal patina featured hauler.  The owner of Laid Back USA has a couple of woodies he uses as part of the promotional display but felt like he needed something authentic to haul the classics around in.Laid Back Hualer

Enter this GMC truck that was converted into a car hauler in five short months, just ready for a premiere at our friends at Hot Rod’s Power TourPower Tour DecalI especially likedthe innards were modified to be reliable but the exterior was kept “as is” essentially.

Krypton Green 2016 Camaro Is Hypnotic

Close up of Krypton Green Bow TiesSEMA Show has plenty of amazing new and improved products.  But the one display that kept the crowds baffled was Chevrolet’s floor display of a 2016 Camaro – labeled Krypton Green.  What kept the crowds mystified was a pulsating display of bow ties on the front quarters.2016 Camaro

The display was hypnotic as the bow ties came on and off.  Crowds kept looking for a light source or a projector beam but could not find one.  Lots of smart guys put their hand in front of the body panel thinking they would block the “light”.

Lumilor Paint

But the bow ties were actually layers of paint – LumiLor paint to be specific that glowed as an electric current  was applied to the body panel.Krypton Camaro Bow Ties

This is a neat look but at $80,000 for the effect, might be out of the budget for most folks.  But a great display of undying American ingenuity from Darkside Scientific.

What do you think?  Would you do it if you could afford it?
